Contact improvisation: basics
Contact improvisation (CI) is an improvised dance and movement practice. Working with partners, we use touch and points of contact to explore movement patterns and develop a range of subtle as well as highly physical movement skills. The focus moves between awareness of one’s own body and the connection to the partner’s body and movement. An open ended exploration of movement and its continued relationship to physical laws.
This course dives into the basic principles of CI, and is accessible and interesting for participants with all levels of experience. It supports a creative mind, and helps to develop our spontaneity and physical abilities. Each dance is new and different and expresses the personal research of the moment.
The weekly training aims at developing a better understanding of basic CI skills like rolling points of contact, active listening, sliding, falling, flowing, as well as giving, receiving, and sharing weight. Sometimes we will be dancing solo, sometimes with a partner, sometimes with the whole group.
